Privacy Policy

Learn Jamaican is a small, free app for learning Jamaican Patois. We keep data collection to the minimum the app needs to work, and this page explains — in plain language — exactly what that is.

Effective 24 August 2026 · Last updated 24 August 2026

The short version

  • No account, no sign-up. You never give us your name, email or password to use the app.
  • Favourites and quiz history stay on your phone. They are never uploaded to us.
  • Suggest a term sends only what you type, plus your IP address for spam control.
  • The app is ad-supported via Google AdMob. Google may use your device's advertising ID; you can opt out of personalised ads in your phone settings.
  • We do not sell your personal information and we do not use third-party analytics or crash-reporting SDKs.

01 Who we are

This policy covers the Learn Jamaican mobile app for iOS and Android (published by Zhultek) and the website at learnjamaican.app, together "the Service". When we say "we", "us" or "our", we mean the Learn Jamaican team, who act as the data controller for any personal data described here.

By using the Service you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the app or website.

02 What we collect

We designed Learn Jamaican so that it works without knowing who you are. Below is everything the app and website handle, grouped by where it lives.

Stored only on your device

The app remembers a few things locally so it's useful between sessions. This data is kept in the app's private storage on your phone, is never transmitted to our servers, and is deleted when you uninstall the app.

  • Favourites — the terms and proverbs you've starred.
  • Quiz history — your recent quiz scores, used to show your progress and streak and to decide when to show the in-app "rate this app" prompt.
  • Content cache — a copy of the terms and proverbs so the app works offline, plus the time you were last online.
  • Ad consent choices — stored by the Google Mobile Ads SDK so you aren't asked again (see Advertising).

Sent to our servers

The app downloads its content (greetings, responses, everyday words, quiz questions and proverbs) from our API. When you submit a term through Suggest a term, we store what you send us so we can review it.

DataWhenWhy
Term, meaning and optional notesWhen you submit a suggestionTo review and, if approved, add the term to the app
Platform (iOS/Android) and app versionWhen you submit a suggestionTo help us reproduce issues with the form
IP addressEvery request to our API, including suggestionsRate limiting (two suggestions per day), duplicate detection, abuse prevention and standard server logs
Request metadata (timestamp, endpoint, user agent)Every request to our APIStandard web-server logging for security and troubleshooting
Please don't include personal information (your name, email, phone number, or details about other people) in the term, meaning or notes fields. Suggestions are reviewed by us and, if approved, the term and meaning may be published in the app for everyone.

Collected by our advertising partner

The app shows ads served by Google AdMob. When an ad is requested, Google's SDK may collect your device's advertising identifier, IP address, device type and OS version, coarse location derived from IP, and interaction data such as ad views and taps. We do not receive this data directly; Google processes it under its own privacy policy. See Advertising for details and how to limit it.

What we don't collect

  • No account details — there is no sign-up, login, or password.
  • No contacts, photos, precise location, or calendar access.
  • No microphone access. The app plays audio pronunciations but does not record. The Android MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS permission is used only to route playback correctly.
  • No notifications or push tokens — the app never asks for notification permission.
  • No third-party analytics, crash-reporting, or social-media SDKs. The optional "rate this app" prompt is handled by Apple or Google's own rating dialog; we don't see what you enter there.

03 How we use it

  • To run the app — deliver content from our API and keep your favourites and quiz history available on your device.
  • To review suggestions — read, approve or reject terms you send us, and publish approved terms in the app.
  • To keep the Service safe — rate-limit requests, detect duplicate or automated submissions, and investigate abuse.
  • To show ads — fund the free app through Google AdMob.
  • To respond to you — if you email us, we use your message and email address to reply.

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, our legal bases are: performance of a contract (providing the app you asked for), legitimate interests (security, abuse prevention, reviewing suggestions, and funding the app with non-personalised ads), and consent (personalised advertising, which you can withdraw at any time).

04 Advertising

Learn Jamaican is free and supported by banner and occasional full-screen ads delivered by Google AdMob (Google LLC). Google may use the data described above to serve ads, measure their performance and prevent fraud.

Consent

If you're in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, the app shows Google's consent form before the first ad loads. You can decline personalised advertising there; you'll still see ads, but they won't be based on your interests. On iOS, the app also asks for App Tracking Transparency permission ("This identifier will be used to deliver personalized ads to you."). If you decline, Google won't use your device's advertising identifier for tracking across apps.

Limiting personalised ads

  • iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking, and turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track, or toggle it off for Learn Jamaican. You can also turn off Personalized Ads under Settings → Privacy & Security → Apple Advertising.
  • Android: Settings → Google → Ads (or Settings → Privacy → Ads), and choose Delete advertising ID or Opt out of Ads Personalization.
  • Everywhere: visit Google Ads Settings to manage how Google personalises ads for you.

For more on how Google uses data from apps that use its services, see policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites and Google's Privacy Policy. A list of ad technology providers Google may work with is available at support.google.com/admob/answer/9012903.

05 Sharing

We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information. We share data only in these cases:

  • Google AdMob — as described in Advertising. Google acts as an independent controller for the ad data it collects.
  • Hosting providers — our API and website run on third-party infrastructure that processes data on our behalf under contract.
  • Google Fonts — this website loads its typefaces from Google's servers, which means Google receives your IP address and browser details when the page loads (see This website).
  • Legal reasons — if required by law, court order, or to protect the rights, safety or property of our users or the public.
  • Business transfer — if the app is sold or transferred, your data may move with it, and the new owner will be bound by this policy until it's updated.

Approved term suggestions are published in the app as content. Only the term and its meaning are published — never your IP address, platform, app version, or notes.

06 Retention

07 Your choices

  • Clear on-device data: remove individual favourites in the app, or uninstall the app to erase everything stored locally.
  • Suggestions: you don't have to use the Suggest a term feature. If you'd rather not send anything through the app, you can email us instead.
  • Ads: use the consent form (EEA/UK/Switzerland), the iOS tracking prompt, or your device's ad settings as described in Advertising. On Android you can also reset your advertising ID at any time.
  • Network: the app works offline for content it has already downloaded, and no data is sent while you're offline.

08 Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, UK GDPR, Jamaica's Data Protection Act, or the California Consumer Privacy Act), you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you and receive a copy;
  • Correct inaccurate data;
  • Ask us to delete your data;
  • Object to or restrict certain processing;
  • Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent;
  • Receive your data in a portable format;
  • Not be discriminated against for exercising these rights;
  • Lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.

To exercise any of these, email hello@learnjamaican.app. Because we don't hold accounts, we may ask for details (such as the term you suggested and roughly when) so we can find the relevant record. We'll respond within 30 days.

California residents: we do not sell personal information, and we do not "share" it for cross-context behavioural advertising except through the Google AdMob integration described above, which you can limit via your device settings.

09 Security

All traffic between the app and our servers uses HTTPS. Suggestion submissions are validated and rate-limited, and only the team can access the review queue behind an authenticated admin panel. We keep server access restricted and apply security updates promptly. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security — but we collect as little as possible so there is little to lose.

10 Children

Learn Jamaican is a general-audience language app and is not directed at children under 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your country). We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal data — for example through a term suggestion — please contact us and we will delete it.

11 International transfers

Our servers and service providers (including Google) may be located outside your country, including in the United States. Where data is transferred out of the EEA or UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses or the provider's participation in an approved data-transfer framework.

12 This website

The public pages of learnjamaican.app don't use analytics, tracking pixels, or advertising. The site sets no cookies for visitors; a session cookie is used only on the private admin login area. The site loads typefaces from Google Fonts, which involves your browser requesting files from Google's servers (and therefore sharing your IP address and browser details with Google). Our web server keeps standard access logs (IP address, requested URL, user agent, timestamp) for security and troubleshooting, retained as described in Retention.

13 Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, mention it in the app's release notes or on the landing page. Continued use of the Service after a change means you accept the updated policy.

14 Contact
